Mrs Proudie, the Bishop's wife, starts a vindictive campaign against Mr Crawley in an attempt to get rid of him. She fails and the mystery about the stolen cheque is solved satisfactorily. Many characters from previous Barchester novels appear and threads left hanging from Part One and previous novels are tied up.
