FOREWORD As we move into the last quarter of 2019, I am proud of the strides that we have made in the sector. We continue to receive positive global attention and accreditation as a leading travel destination in the continent. It is our intention as a Ministry to continuously monitor and adapt to dynamic market needs for our destination. We recently attended the 23rd edition of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly in St Petersburg, Russia. During the meeting, Kenya was elected as the UNWTO Executive Council member representing Africa (2019-2023). Kenya was also elected as the Chair of the Executive Council for the year 2019-2020. This is an important achievement not only for us, but also for Africa and its vibrant travel and tourism industry. The State is set to operationalize an entity charged with marketing the country as a meeting and events destination. This goes hand in hand with our continued efforts in marketing the country as a conferencing destination. The entity will be the Kenya National Convention Bureau and it will be made up of officials from the National Treasury, Tourism, Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Sports Ministries as well as the private sector, including the Kenya Private Sector Alliance, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Kenya Tourism Federation. The Bureau will develop and implement a national business events strategy, market Kenya as a business events destination, advice and coordinate the bidding process for Meetings, Incentives, Conferencing and Exhibitions (MICE) events by public and private entities. We recently launched the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) that will enable us to gauge ourselves both locally and internationally to make better-informed decisions about tourism in our country. Kenya is the third country in Africa to launch TSA behind Rwanda and South Africa. Through the union of Kenya Wildlife Service, Leibniz Institute for Zoo & Wildlife Research and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, 10 oocytes were harvested from the two last left northern white rhinos in a bid to save them from extinction. This is a first for Kenya and the successfully harvested eggs were matured, fertilised with northern white rhino semen generating two embryos that will be carried by two surrogate southern white rhinos. Among other firsts, I joined H.E the President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta in flagging off 200,000 barrels of Kenya’s first crude oil shipment that will generate us Shs.1.3 billion. These are great milestones we are making as a nation. I am also happy that Air Italy flights will resume flights into the Mombasa County from the 28th October 2019. This is a big endorsement and show of confidence in the destination. Through Kenya Tourism Board, the Ministry will continue to seek more partnerships with Charters under the Charter Incentives Program to encourage more Charters into the country.

6 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

As an industry we have put in work to ensure that we promote our tourism, we are happy that we have platforms such as the Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE). We believe that such events are integral to showcasing Kenya’s brand in a positive cultural, social and economic platform. We are looking forward to attending the MKTE 2019 which will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre from the 2nd - 4th October 2019. Without key tourism partners, the Government would not be able to fulfill its mandate to showcase Kenya to the world and I would like to take this opportunity to thank every partner and stakeholder for their unrelenting efforts in promoting Kenya as a global destination. On behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, I wish Go Places™ readers an exciting October - November 2019. Keep reading to find out more about what our Magical land Kenya has to offer, and Tembea Kenya.

FOREWORD Greetings and welcome to another exciting season set to commence in October and November. As the Country’s national tourism board we are proud to note that Kenya’s position as a leading tourism destination has continued to be cemented. Tourism is Kenya’s jewel and it is our desire that our market continues to be dynamic and give our visitors an unforgettable experience in MagicalKenya. Mombasa’s 18-hole Nyali Golf and Country Club hosted the first series of the 2019 Safari Tour golf championships. This revamped series has 12 events across four East African countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. This further enhances the notion that Kenya is the hub of diversity when it comes to tourism. Kenya’s culture is diverse and this is one of our selling points. The 30th edition of the annual camel derby was held in Maralal and it was a successful event. Business for the locals increased due to the high number of tourists in the area, especially domestic tourists. Guests were able to experience the rich diversity of the Samburu culture. Northern Kenya is a tourism gem that needs to be continuously explored. It is exciting to see various stakeholders working together towards improving the tourism products in the region. Transportation is an essential necessity when it comes to tourism and travel, and as it grows so does the tourism sector. Air India is set to resume direct flights between Mumbai and Nairobi from September 27. This will be a big boost to the Kenya tourism sector. As a long haul tourism destination, increased direct flights to Kenya from our key source markets is essential to supporting the continued growth of our visitor arrivals. We are happy to be part of yet another edition of the largest East Africa tourism fair Magical Kenya Travel Expo (MKTE) 2019 which will take place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) from 2nd to 4th October. This platform continues to provide us with an opportunity to nurture new tourism partners from exhibitors, hosted buyers and media representatives. These ambassadors share with the world what they have experienced and highlight our unmatched tourism products and experiences.

12 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

We are confident that through our continued partnerships and collaboration with all tourism stakeholders, our dynamic destination marketing activities will continue to raise the profile of MagicalKenya and thus lead to increased international tourism visitor arrivals as well as continue to boost domestic tourism travel. Go out and taste the beauty of our beautiful country. We appreciate the efforts of Go Places™ in ensuring that as an industry we collectively strive to take our tourism sector to greater heights. On behalf of myself and the Kenya Tourism Board, I wish you all an enjoyable read.

Jimi Kariuki Chairman, Kenyan Tourism Board

Tourism and Travel Kenya’s Key Trade in Services In 2018, during the Inaugural Kenya National Trade Week, the Government launched the Integrated National Export Development and Promotion Strategy (INEDPS), which is the country’s blueprint towards ensuring export-led industrialization in order to spur economic growth for the country. This is aimed at growing Kenya exports annually by 25% with a view to power Kenya’s Big Four Agenda as well as the Vision 2030 to make Kenya a prosperous Nation for all the citizen. The Strategy highlights priority sectors of growth including tourism as Kenya’s trade in services that are key to economic growth due to its foreign exchange netting. The significance of services component in the INEDPS is underscored by the lead role that the sector plays in the economy through its 60% contribution to the GDP. This fact is resonated in the Kenya Vision 2030, where services sector was earmarked as one of the priority sectors to drive Kenya’s integration in the international trade system and to contribute towards generation of sustainable growth rate at 10 percent per annum. Consequently, with this growth trajectory, Kenya has become an emerging economy with her growth rate averaged at 6% in the last decade being among the highest in Africa and indeed the World. According to the WTO General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS), tourism and travel fall in to; hotels and restaurants; travel agencies and tour operators’ services; as well as tourist guide services. As evidenced in Kenya’s commitments under the EAC and the WTO, the country has export capabilities in all the categories of tourism and travel related services. Although the wide menu of tourism products has strengthened the Nation brand globally, there is a lot more untapped areas that can enhance opportunities for trade in services. As envisioned in INEDPS, it is time to create a shift and amplify other products to strengthen the country’s global competitiveness. Some of the potential areas prioritized as untapped and emerging tourism and travel areas to boost the export sector through trade in services include: Medical tourism: Nairobi has various excellent medical facilities with the potential to draw medical tourists from neighbouring countries or within Kenya. It is beitting to consider Kenya a home to best doctors who are globally competitive. The Aga Khan University Hospital in Kenya was the first in East Africa to be accredited by the Joint Commission International, a prestigious international recognition for hospitals providing quality patient care and safety, a pointer that Kenya is selfsustainable in terms of patient care and world-class health services. Only 13 health care facilities in Africa are JCIaccredited.

have earned the country medals at the grandest stages across the world. During July 2019, I visited Iten town that has been profiled by the International Association Athletics (IAAF) as an Athletics Heritage Town and met with foreign athletics enthusiasts from Canadians, Singapore, Malaysia, Europe among other regions who had visited the Country on a Kenya Experience Tour. Kenya also prides in producing other excelling sporting categories like rugby, swimming, safari rally racing, among others. The country prides in other sporting codes that currently exist or that have potential for development, e.g. golf, but are not known either due to lack of products or poor packaging and marketing. Conference tourism: It is no doubt that Kenya has played host to high level global meetings that have put the country on the global map. The recent Global Blue Economy Conference is a case in point where Nairobi played host to high level discussions around blue economy. Hence MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) is an area that if well packaged, is key to enhancing business tourism. The Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA) will continue to collaborate with key partners to create synergy points and ensure that key growth sectors as outlined in NEDPS are implemented. The Agency is a merger between Export Promotion Council and Brand Kenya Board charged with a bigger mandate of coordination all exports products and country branding initiatives. We endeavor to be a model organization that exceeds the expectations of our customers, the people of Kenya, development partners and investors through efficient and effective service delivery. We call upon all our key stakeholders for unequivocal support to join us in building the Kenya we want.

MR. PETER K. BIWOTT, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER KENYA EXPORT PROMOTION AND BRANDING AGENCY.

Sports tourism: Kenya is widely known globally as the home of champions. Athletics is Kenya’s forte as numerous runners

LET’S GO FIND OUR TRUE NORTH

Rather undiscovered, the gems that are KWS Parks in northern Kenya await discovery and exploration. Set on the wild and rugged shores of Lake Turkana, the cradle of mankind that is Sibiloi National Park is home to important archaeological sites including Koobi Fora where the fossil remains have contributed more to the understanding of human evolution than any other site in the continent. Visitors can see the fossil of a three million year old giant tortoise, an ancient species of crocodile and a behemoth dating back to millions of years. The Park is characterized by semi-desert habitat and open plains flanked by volcanic formations including Mount Sibiloi, where the remains of the petrified forest can be seen. Lake Turkana which is the most saline of Africa’s large lakes and the world’s largest permanent desert and alkaline lake. Sibiloi serves as a stopover for migrant waterfowls and is a major breeding ground for the Nile crocodile carrying the world’s largest population of Nile crocodiles and is surrounded by the Dassanach, Turkana and Gabra communities with very rich and unpolluted traditional cultures. Further north, lies Marsabit National Park & Reserve that features a densely forested mountain and three crater lakes that provide a haven for a variety of birdlife, mammals and reptiles. The lower slopes of the mountain might be scorched and dry but the richly forested scenic views around makes it just as magical and a sight to behold. The beautiful park is a refuge for the huge tusked bull elephants and the most famous elephant named Ahmed was his home until he died at an estimated age of 63 years. The patriarch, Ahmed was highly guarded and accorded round the clock protection from poachers by a presidential decree. A model of elephant Ahmed now stands tall at the National

Museum of Kenya in Nairobi. Birdlife and reptiles are diverse and rich that any bird lover would have a field day ticking off the list each one of them. This destination is basically an ornithologist’s happy place. The extinct volcanic craters locally known as gofs around the Park make Marsabit such a wonderland. Located on the eastern side of the Park, Gof Bongole is the largest and most stagy of the craters with a dizzying 10 kilometer round rim. Lake Paradise is the most scenic and famous as it has been featured in quite a number of films. The natural amphitheater of Gof Sorkote Guda has a 150 meters high caldera that shelters the fresh waters of Lake Paradise. Most of these craters are home to a diverse number of bird species including the rare lammergeyer. Enjoy hikes in the dense forest wreathed in mist camel rides, bird watching and visits to the singing wells. We hope you find your true north. Soon! Greetings Readers! The National Museums of Kenya has embarked on conserving various historical sites. One of our key sites is the Fort Jesus World Heritage Site. This iconic national monument’s wall was crumbling and being eaten away by the sea waters, but I’m happy to inform you that the construction of the long awaited seawall project is almost complete. This will protect the walls from further erosion by the water considering the last wall was built over 500 years ago. Another restoration project in the pipeline is the refurbishment of the Jaramongi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum. Museums are the country’s storehouse of old artefacts, sculptures, objects and history, they help to preserve and promote our cultural heritage.

HERITAGE TOUR Within The City

his is a story about history, love, perseverance, and success. Who does not love such stories? Hotels to me for the longest time have just been buildings but Sarova Stanley’s Heritage Tour opened my mind to it being more than just that. We go back to a time when Kenya was a British colony when Stanley hotel was opened in 1902 as a small restaurant with approximately six rooms by Mayence Bent. The story doesn’t stop there, the Stanley

44 | Go Places www.goplacesdigital.com

hotel survived a fire and that is how their journey of perseverance begins. After the fire, the owners were able to salvage the staircase which leads to the rooms, the revolving door which is now the exit and a wall clock. The fire gave birth to the New Stanley hotel which had 60 rooms in three stories. May together with her husband ran the hotel until he fell ill and they moved back to London, the death of May’s husband went with her interest to run the hotel.

New Stanley hotel was then sold to Abraham Lazarus Block and in 1958 the hotel was torn down and rebuilt in an expansion bid. As it stands now the hotel has preserved its history with a few modifications here and there to keep up with the changing times. The hotel has 214 rooms on 8 floors with three heritage suites that have their styles. The presidential suite is a sight to behold and it comes with its own bodyguard room.`Each room, has a story to tell from Lamu to Karen Blixen. They are designed to capture distinct artifacts from that era or from that person. Sarova Stanley is a hotel within the city , you would expect it to be noisy but a walk through the rooms you would think that you are on the outskirts of the city. The Thorn Tree Restaurant was one of the first open-air restaurants in Nairobi. It was named after the Naivasha thorn tree which is at the center of the restaurant. The first post office in Nairobi was based here. This is where people used to leave messages for their loved ones on the thorns of the tree. To this day people

still leave messages on the tree as an ode to the first post office. The tree, however, is the third of its variety. During the replanting ceremony of the tree, they buried a time capsule that will be opened in 2038. The Exchange Bar has stories to tell through its name changes. It was first opened in 1932 as The New Stanley Long Bar, this referred to the length of the bar. The Exchange Bar is the successor of the renowned Long Bar. In 1922, the Stanley Hotel was the first hotel to serve Tusker Beer. The Exchange Bar acknowledges the Nairobi Securities Exchange. At the Exchange Bar there is a love story, a man walked from Cape Town in a bid to win the love of his life. He walked into the Exchange Bar and ordered the most expensive drink in the house to quench his thirst. There is a bell at the bar which rings only when the most expensive drink in the house is bought. Once you ring the bell you have to buy everyone in the bar a drink. When I took the Heritage Tour the drink had been bought the previous night. The 1902 Club lounge is an exclusive

blend of sophistication and luxury. It is only accessible to people who have paid for rooms that are in the second category and above. The hotel has hosted many dignitaries from Queen Elizabeth to Ernest Hemingway. All these dignitaries have influenced in part the history of Sarova Stanley and through this, we can experience the in-depth Heritage tour. The journey from the Stanley hotel to Sarova Stanley has shown the growth of this beautiful establishment to one of the five-star luxury hotels in the country. The moniker Sarova was derived from the names of the wives of the new owners of the establishment. Truly Sarova Stanley has a story to tell and you too can experience the Heritage Tour. They accept walk-ins but the tour ends by 6 in the evening to avoid colliding with the guests of the hotel.

Chef

ALEXANDER MBISI JAMES From: Rozina’s Restaurant

Cooking is about passion, so it may look slightly temperamental in a way that it’s too assertive to the naked eye

-Gordon Ramsay-

Alexander Mbisi James describes himself as a chef who is driven by passion and that is the cornerstone of his culinary journey. He has been in the kitchen since 2013 but he started as a steward. Alexander is now the head chef at Rozina’s restaurant. Good looking for food is not enough for this head chef, the taste is very necessary. He states that the one ingredient he cannot live without is basil because of his affinity to Italian dishes. He is a chef with vast skills but his favourite dish to make is the creamy zucchini pesto. He looks up to Chef Gordon Ramsay and through him he has enhanced his skills in the kitchen. Through following his shows and trying out his recipes he has continued to grow. Chef Alexander relishes the finer nuances of tolerance, resilience and listening in the kitchen. There is an undeniable bond between the kitchen staff and the chef. He states that through this bond they are able to understand each other’s work dynamics. This makes it easier for him to run the kitchen because he is in sync with his team. The one ingredient he would like to work with are scallops, he has ideas buzzing in his head on how he could work with this delicate seafood. He believes that good food is universal and learning something new will always be exciting for him.

MALINDI MUSEUM T his three-storey waterfront building is located just few meters from Malindi jetty and the fish market. Its structure is a symbol of Swahili architecture and contains displays of a stuffed coelacanth ( bottom dwelling fish, now extinct), archaeological findings dug up around the coast, and a collection of rare vigango (wooden burial tortems).

The building, known as the house of columns, is a charming, double storey structure, with a tiled roof, located a few metres from the Malindi jetty and fish market. The building has served many functions in the past; it has acted as a Native Civil hospital until 1952 and then as the Malindi Fisheries Office until it was finally handed over to the National Museums of Kenya in 1999. In May 2004 the building opened its doors to the general public as Malindi Museum.

The building has four entrances. Two on the east facade are reached through a colonnade of 5 rounded pillars. One entrance has an Indian Gujerati hand fitted to it, the other with a Swahili carved door. Inside on the first floor, there are examples of beautifully carved Bajuni doors. The museum currently houses temporary exhibitions. Onversely, the original plan might have divided the building into two separate units all entered through the front facade. The ground floor unit was perhaps exclusively through the Indian door which opened onto three parallel long rooms one behind the other (probably used as a shop and store); while the first floor unit was through the Swahili door opening onto a corridor of two room deep leading to a masonry staircase and up to the first floor of the building and the terrace (the residential area). If this was the situation, then the idea that the exterior wooden staircase and the two doors along the south façade being secondary addition to the building is valid.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN BUYING PROPERTY OFF PLAN

Owning property is an essential need for every single person. Getting to that realization that one needs to invest in property ownership can take a while. Buying property off plan is technically buying into a promise that you hope will be fulfilled as well as investing your money on nothing more than an architectural plan. GOLF FOR BEGINNERS By Rizwan Charania Head Teaching Professional & TPI Golf Fitness Coach at the RC Golf Academy

DEVELOP A GOOD PRE SHOT ROUTINE Every player you’ll watch on television has their own pre-shot routine. So why shouldn’t you? And whether you’re on the course or enjoying a practice session, every shot you hit should include a pre-shot routine. To play your best and to perform better under pressure, build a solid pre-shot routine and stick to it. Here are some steps you can use to build a pre-shot routine and perform your best on every shot, most importantly keep it simple and short: 1.

Choose your target standing directly behind the ball. Look down the target line and choose a spot a few feet in front of the ball. Keep your eye on that spot and take one or two practice swings at the most.

2.

Approach the ball, set your clubface behind the ball and pointing to the near target. Make sure the club face is square.

3.

Once the club is set and you have gripped the club, align your body parallel to the target line and place your feet parallel to your shoulder line. Important tip here, never align with your feet first but with your shoulders.

4.

Next, take one last look at your target and execute the shot without wasting too much time as this allows your brain to get distracted with destructive thoughts that will affect the shot.

BOOK REVIEW

GENRE: Domestic Fiction This is Tayari Jones’ fourth novel and it highlights a miscarriage of justice. It focuses on Celestial and Roy who are recently married. The couple first met in college and their story begins from there. Roy works in the corporate sector while Celestial is an artist who makes handmade dolls. While visiting Roy’s home, Roy is arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping a woman. Celestial knows he is innocent of the crime because Roy was with her at the time the rape took place. Roy is a lucky man because he has a large support system and Celestial testifies in his favor. His conviction tests the resolve of their marriage. While Roy is in prison Celestial leans on her childhood friend, Andre, who was also the best man at their wedding. When Roy is released after five years the dynamics of their life together are not the same. Celestial had created a life for herself in his absence and she has to decide on how they can move forward. An American Marriage is a necessary novel that explores different themes that are timely in the American society. It explores factors such as the ills caused by mass incarceration and the US criminal justice system through the wrongful imprisonment of Roy. It also highlights how imprisonment of loved ones impacts their relationships. It talks about issues such as fidelity, black men and their roles, and black women and their perceived strength. This is a must-read for societies across the world to understand the dynamics of the law and how necessary it is for us to be educated.

Tayari Jones is an American writer. She is a graduate of Spelman College, the University of Iowa, and Arizona State University. She is currently a member of the English faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University. She is the author of four novels and her recent book an American Marriage won the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction. Oprah Winfrey announced that she is producing a film adaptation of the book.

YOGA

WHAT YOU NEED TO CARRY FOR YOUR FIRST YOGA CLASS Yoga is a practice based on self-awareness, self-love, and freedom from materialistic things. This practice has become more mainstream and many people are interested in finding healing and spiritual freedom from actively practicing yoga. Yoga is estimated to be at least 5,000 years old, originating in the Indus Valley Civilization in India. When you’re brand new to yoga, you’re likely to have a lot of questions about what you’re getting into, including what to wear, what to bring to class, and how to prepare yourself. Here is a list of things you need for your first yoga class:

WATER BOTTLE This can be a reusable bottle and you can fill it up once your supply is out. Hydration before, during and after your yoga session is necessary for you to replenish the fluids you lost. You can choose to use coconut water during your sessions as well.

YOGA TOWEL This is necessary especially if you sweat a lot or you are trying out hot yoga. Being sweaty might hinder your practice. A small hand towel is enough for you.

COMFORTABLE YOGA ATTIRE Most people do not know what to do when going for yoga. You attire should be something you can easily move your body in, like flowing pants and a supportive top. Your outfit should stay put because you do not want to be constantly adjusting your shirt or pants. Yoga is usually done barefoot but if you are uncomfortable then you can wear yoga socks. Yoga needs one to be calm and any destruction can take you out of the zone of your experience.

YOUR OWN MAT Yoga studios provide you with mats but it is better to have your own. This is the best way for you to ensure that it is well taken care of. If you are planning to practice yoga consistently then having your own yoga mat is an investment for you.

An open mind and positive attitude is the best way to enjoy your yoga sessions. You can continue to acquire more yoga equipment as you continue to enjoy your sessions. YOGA STUDIOS IN NAIROBI: AFRICA YOGA STUDIO, BIKRAM YOGA NAIROBI, YOGA HEART KENYA
