Beauty in all sizes. Style in all colors. Enjoy this little portion before Friday’s post. These are some of the women and men showing us their own way of being black and, beautiful.
Sexy is walking the catwalk with confidence. Unsexy is having your your hair running off your head and, leaving your boyfriend perplexed and wondering, “what the hell just happened”?
Naomi is on a mission to the making of a double tragic: swimming with a wig and, wearing styling that is destroying her hair … maybe she’s trying to prove some point, some anti-style point? Which is a little ironic since she’s in the fashion world as a model? I’m not sure what is going on here. I thought models would have access to the best of the best. In addition, her boyfriend, Vladislav Doronin is a Russian Donald Trump!
Anyhow even the healthiest hair in the world will not last long when it is ratted, abundantly washed with hairspray, straightened, curled, or colored before every fashion show.
Merci Beaucoup, please don’t do this again!
Vanessa Fonsenca is the first model to be featured in my now new section on Black Beauty Feature. Hailing from the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro she is a 5’11 beauty who was born in 1986. She is a signed model with Attractive Elite Models among others. This chica is rounding the world from New York to Paris to Milan. Definitely hitting the hubs of style. Watch out for the Brazilian wind blowing this way: featured in the Cantão and D&G advertisements, this stunner is definately doing it big.
Growing up my mother taught me that being black was a gem. It was part of being formed by God. Kissed by the golden sun. The combination was unbeatable. I said to myself, If I am going to think black, I will think positive about it. Don’t think down on it, or think it is something in your way. And this way, when you really do want to stretch out, and express how beautiful black is, everybody will hear you. Enjoy the black beauties. Next up on a later post, I will explore this beauty in black men.
Teiko Dorno, She is Ghanaian and fabulous:

Here is one Artist I newly discovered to watch out for: She is of Jamaican heritage (from her mom’s side) and Puerto Rican descent (father’s side). Drum-roll……She is from the UK and I have a great feeling she will hail internation as well. Brown describes her sound as “musical mashed potatoes”. Her style has been described as retro pop with an indie punk and rock edge. The Los Angeles Times has said: “Brown delivers something her retro UK peers have thus far lacked – just pure, whimsical fun”. Enjoy.
Baby Phat decided to show a Michelle Obama with a twist on the New York runway. I like it very much. The accessories, the cuts worked well to customize the look. Yay to Michelle being a classy fashion icon. We desperately need the classy types.
The catwalk has been freed to swell with color and majestic graces of diversity. Even though black people don’t realise this small changes, these are the “I have a dream” speeches coming true. Not only the presentation of blacks on runways but the equal appreciation of beauty in every color. It makes us relate and appreciate the dorned coutoure as a style that can be dynamically wearble regardless of race. Anyhow, although change is slow, at least it is gradual. That is fabulous.
You quickly walk down the street and up ahead you see a crowd of men all around talking. You just know it then that road construction teams should have invented a policy that would require a sign that said “Herd of Men Ahead. Brace Yourself” they should also have provided an exit sign that screamed: “Comments Were Never Meant to Offend. Come Again”.
So that’s the case and you walk your cute self into a sea of lions. Like a lamb walking past hungry wolves. I decided to take a detour nowadays. I know I’ve got it and it’s my own swagg. I don’t need approval from any hungry wolves. But no, a “holla” just means there is a hunter and a silly prey walking into the mouth of a starving creature. Compliments are welcome though 🙂
Yes the Knowles look like royalt. Okay, pop royalty. It’s especially prominent when they travel in a pack. As the old adage goes….two is better than one anyways.
The knowles do it African style:
Arise featured these three beauties during the 2008 Africa Rising event. It was also a chance to feature couture/custom pieces by Nigerian designers: The supermodels (Naomi Campbell, Alek Wek & Liya Kebebe) were best dressed by Nigerian designers, Deola Sagoe, Fati Asibelua of MOMO Couture, Lanre DaSilva Ajayi of LDA. As I browsed through the magazine, I was overcome with glee. As a woman of African descent, I was proud to see that African fashion is booming.
Arise Magazine did a coverage of an event that showcased African Fashion Collective at New York Fashion Week in February 2009. It was the group’s fashion debut at the prestigious fashion extravaganza. Xuly Bet, Tiffany Amber, Stoned Cherrie, and Momo presented their Fall 2009 collections to the fashion elite.
Nanette Lepore truly channels the inner nature gypsy and her bohemian influence is well suited no matter what colors she chooses to showcase. Watch out for these fall colors:
Ayo is a fresh face. This Neo-soul singer is not just sharing the steps, she is stepping on them and has great potential. I recently discovered her hidden treasures and now I’m on there stepping with her.
Listen to her: Down on My Knees:
In B. Republic:
This is one lady who really takes it a step higher without trying too hard. Noemie is a french beauty who looks elegant walking a dog. How many can pull that off?
Again:
Illustrations can tell a story that words fail to describe.
Selita goes to NYC home of the big apple:
Beyonce in Paris: always a show-stopper.
This one lady has got that futuristic look working for her:
This one lady is looking fly:
Rock a dress.
Ciara is taking back style: Even on a casual day:Can I hear a YES!
Farrell is never out of step with his game…even if the game is grey:
Jourdan Dunn on her day off looking casual:
Okay you know I just had to throw in Mr. West in there. Street styler himself!!!
Oscar de la Renta a fashion superstar is the ultimate splash for a non-boring show. The ladies rocked classic pieces on the runway. These are not only elegant but wearable runway material. This look also says: “show me the money”.
Dark, daring, but never depressing.
This is how one of the models dresses on her day off the runway. I on the other hand, think that this outfit borders on ambiguity. Is it an outfit or a get-up?? gurl got me so confused. I want to high-five her off-work style from being different from those other runway robots. So kudos to that.
It’s all about the scarf so then it must be about the neck area too. I am loving the details on the Rhi Rhi scarf. I’m intrigued by the fact that this scarf doesn’t look cliched like a Shemagh usually would. Gurl you own this style. And those of you who know me know I really like the details in an outfit.
Some wear it right too: These boys do have the scarf swagg going on:
This young lady wears her Shemagh casually and relaxed:
This one beauty chose to worn hers on her head.
